  1. Hi Philip,

Can you please tell me which sketch section your model is based on and what your words are?

    Cheers,

  2. Hi Ros

The sketch section I based my design on is Malangi (Crawling) and Banksy (Work).

The upper studio is devoted to Malangi and resembles the shape of a man or an animal in motion, crawling with its back hunched up and the stairs are mimicking the motions of a crawling lizard going back and forth. The structure supporting the windows on both sides of the art gallery relates to the branches of a tree, something Malangi also had incorporated into the artwork I had chosen from him.

The studio below ground is devoted to Banksy, with the walls here being tall enough to fit his large art. The two compartments are segmented up like the floors of an office building where people work, allowing Banksy to reach both the upper and lower parts of the wall without the aid of a ladder. At the bottom you can see boxes being stacked on top of each other something that further relates to the notion of work. The stairs are made out of glass and divide the underground studios into work compartments. I chose glass because a lot of his art is surreal, a lot of the times it is difficult to see where one thing begins and another ends, and I wanted to further incorporate that into my design.

When it comes to the gallery space, I choose to recess it into the ground. Malangi is always in a sense coming back down to mother earth for his inspiration and Banksy being a true underground artist, so both these things really pointed me to putting it underground, but not covering it, allowing natural daylight to seep down and illuminate both artists work.
